What is the Squarespace MCP server?
Squarespace runs its own MCP server, which your AI assistant reaches over the internet. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, a shared language that lets AI assistants use the tools of other programs. The server sits at https://mcp.squarespace.com/mcp. There the assistant finds two groups of tools.
- Domains Check name ideas and availability, without signing in and without a Squarespace account.
- Commerce Products, orders and contacts of your shop, after signing in.
Only Claude and ChatGPT control the shop. Other programs that understand MCP see only the domains. Gemini also has Squarespace built in, but there it can only search domains, and only for private Google accounts in the US and in English.
Squarespace announced the service to its partners in early November 2026. The sentence for it: “Manage products, orders, and contacts from your AI assistant”.
| Claude and ChatGPT | Other MCP programs | |
|---|---|---|
| Search domains | Yes | Yes |
| Create and change products | Yes | No |
| View orders | Yes | No |
| Search and maintain contacts | Yes | No |
| Change or ship orders | No | No |
| Pages, blog and design | No | No |
The shop tools appear only after you sign in with your Squarespace account.
What can Claude and ChatGPT do in your shop?
They maintain products, look up orders and manage your contacts. For products, orders and contacts, Squarespace provides its own tools. You write what you need, and the assistant picks the right one.
Products. The assistant creates physical products, services and gift cards. For existing products, it changes name, description, price, sale price, stock, tags and SKU, the item number. It also adjusts the SEO title and SEO description, the details for Google, and whether a product is visible. It adds options, such as the magnum bottle next to the 75 cl bottle, or removes them. “Hide the 2023 Riesling, it is sold out” is enough for a simple request. It looks up digital products and changes them.
Orders. Here it searches and summarises: “Which orders came in this week, regardless of whether paid, open or failed?” The answer comes without you setting a filter. You do not need to open the Commerce area, where you manage products and orders in Squarespace. Why the payment status belongs in the question is explained further down, under the requests.
Contacts. It searches contacts, creates new ones and updates existing ones. You add the restaurateur from the market to your contacts with one sentence. To sync contacts with a customer database (CRM), see the article on the Squarespace contacts interface.
Domains. If you are looking for a name for a new brand, the assistant suggests domains. It checks whether they are free and names the price and alternatives. You can buy only on squarespace.com: for every free domain, it provides a link there.
Where are the limits of the Squarespace MCP server?
According to Squarespace, the assistant moves no money, ships nothing, cancels nothing and deletes nothing. The only exception in the tool list: it can remove single options of a product, such as a bottle size. It reads orders and cannot change them. You handle payments, refunds and shipping in the Commerce area as before.
- Images and categories it sets neither when creating nor when changing. It sees images only when it looks up a product.
- A new option type such as vintages for a wine that so far has only bottle sizes, you set up first in the Commerce area.
- Digital products it does not create new ones.
- The website itself stays as it is. There is no tool for pages, blog posts and design. It maintains product texts, not page texts.
That it cannot delete products, contacts or orders sounds like a gap. In a shop where an AI works along, it is a relief: whole products, contacts or orders do not disappear. It does not restore an overwritten price or text by itself, though.
In one of our engagements in February 2026, a whole product catalogue was to go into Squarespace by CSV file, that is, as a spreadsheet. The import failed on multi-line descriptions, on categories and on images. According to Squarespace’s field list, the MCP server sets neither images nor categories, so it does not replace the import. It does take texts, prices, SKUs and SEO details off your hands.
Which shops benefit from the Squarespace MCP server?
It pays off for shops that you maintain yourselves and where things change often.
Sunday evening, the autumn market is over. There are fewer crates in the car than in the morning, the stock in the shop no longer matches. You also announced a sale price for Monday. Until now that meant: laptop open, Commerce area, product by product. With the MCP server, you tell the assistant as you would a temp. You approve every change before it goes live. On Monday morning, you set the sale price with one sentence.
Whether the Squarespace MCP server saves you time therefore depends mainly on how often you have to go into the shop.
It fits well
- for wine merchants, farm shops and small producers with changing ranges, vintages and promotions
- for service providers who sell offers and gift cards through the shop
- for teams that often search for orders and contacts and prefer asking to filtering
It brings less
- for websites without a shop, where only the domain search remains
- when your work is mostly about images, pages and page text
- for a handful of products that change twice a year: there the Commerce area is the shorter way
If you care more about pages, page text and design, another route leads to the goal.
What do you need to set up the Squarespace MCP server?
You need a Squarespace account with the Administrator or Store Manager role on the website in question. You also need an account with Claude or ChatGPT. As a Website Editor, you cannot use the shop tools.
- Your rights apply. The assistant acts as you, with the rights you have on the website. The roles you assign in Squarespace therefore also apply in the chat.
- Company account. If you use Claude or ChatGPT through a company account, the person who manages it may first have to enable the Squarespace connector. A connector is the assistant’s link to another service.
- Free account with Claude. It has room for one custom connector. If you have already set up another one there, the slot is taken.
- One website per conversation. If you have several Squarespace websites, the assistant asks which one you mean and then stays with it. For the second, you start a new conversation.
- Expired sign-in. The assistant asks again. Follow its instructions, and you can carry on.
How do you connect Squarespace to Claude?
The following guide shows step by step how you set up the connection. You can use it yourselves or pass it on to staff. That is why it addresses the reader directly as a handout. If you find Squarespace among the Connectors in Claude, you pick it there. Otherwise you enter the address from above as a custom connector, and nothing gets installed. If a menu has a different name, that is down to the language or a newer version. Squarespace itself points out that the names change.
Written in the “you” form, so you can pass it on unchanged to staff.
How do you connect Squarespace to ChatGPT?
In ChatGPT, you open the Squarespace app through a link from Squarespace and sign in with your Squarespace account. This guide, too, is meant to use yourselves or to pass on. If a menu name differs, the same applies as for Claude.
The link in step 2 comes from Squarespace and leads straight to the Squarespace app in ChatGPT.
Which requests work well with the Squarespace MCP server?
Requests work well when they are as precise as a handover note. That clears three stumbling blocks right away.
- The order search follows the date an order was last changed. If you name the payment status explicitly, it also finds unpaid, failed and partly paid orders and open refunds.
- A new product is available only once you give a stock level. Without one, it starts at zero and counts as sold out.
- If the assistant repeats a call, a product can end up twice. A fixed product URL prevents that.
You can adapt these requests and copy them into the chat. You overwrite the marked fields right here.
For price changes, you first have it show you what will change.
When creating a product, always give a stock level and a fixed product URL, and do not have it published right away. That way nothing starts as sold out, nothing appears twice, and nobody sees it before you have checked it. You make it visible afterwards with one sentence in the chat.
What should you watch for with approvals?
Make sure you approve changes yourselves, because your customers see whatever the assistant changes immediately. New products stay hidden until you publish them.
Keep confirmation switched on. Squarespace advises keeping approval switched on for tools that write to your website. If the assistant asks for approval, read exactly which product and which value are affected. When it changes a product, also check whether any options get removed.
Not “Allow always”. The option means exactly that: always allow. Claude’s help recommends it only for servers and tools you trust to work unattended. For prices and stock in your shop, you are better off confirming yourselves. If ChatGPT offers a similar shortcut, the same consideration applies.
Conclusion: What does this mean for your shop?
The Squarespace MCP server does not turn Claude or ChatGPT into a web designer. It turns them into a temp in the shop. That temp updates the stock after the market, sets the sale price on Monday and finds the order someone asks about on the phone.
If you want to check this for your own shop, a conversation is the shortest way. More on working together around Squarespace is on the Squarespace agency page, and on AI in everyday work under AI and automation.
The Commerce area stays. You just open it less often.

In a short conversation, we clarify together whether access to your shop fits and how your team uses it safely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Squarespace have an official MCP server?
Yes. Squarespace runs it at https://mcp.squarespace.com/mcp, and you install nothing. The domain tools work without signing in. The shop tools for products, orders and contacts are available after you sign in with your Squarespace account. They are available only in Claude and ChatGPT. Other programs that understand MCP see only the domain search.
Can Claude edit my Squarespace pages or blog posts?
No. The Squarespace MCP server has tools for products, orders, contacts and domains. There is none for pages, blog, page text, design, CSS or forms. The article Maintaining your website with AI shows how a website is maintained in conversation with AI.
Can ChatGPT mark orders as shipped?
According to Squarespace’s developer documentation, it cannot: the order tools only read orders. A Squarespace help page does mention marking as an example, but the tool list has no matching tool. You still handle shipping, payments, refunds and cancellations in the Commerce area.
Which role do I need in Squarespace?
Administrator or Store Manager. Whoever created the website is usually the owner and has all rights. With the Website Editor role, the shop tools are not available. The assistant always acts with exactly the rights you have on the website.
How do I disconnect it again?
In the assistant, not in Squarespace. Squarespace does not show the connection and cannot disconnect it either. In Claude or ChatGPT, you remove Squarespace where you connected it.
